T.A.Y. Drop-In Center a Resource Created by Design for the Young
Finally a center with many supportive services for teenagers and young adults. Youth can enjoy activities, access to a teen clinic, a facility to wash clothes, a kitchen to eat a warm breakfast, and find clothes for job interviews or casual wear.
As a writer I am constantly in touch with leaders of the Los Angeles community and even online communities. In posting of my last article on food pantries in San Fernando Valley, The Village Family Services reached out to me and informed on one of its most recent additions to its facility: The T.A.Y. Drop-In Center. After hearing about the program, I was compelled to meet with Charles Robbins, Vice President of Communications and Development at The Village Family Services for a tour of the site.
The Village Family Services is located in North Hollywood on the cross streets of Laurel Canyon and Vanowen. This bilingual organization offers an assortment of resources for families. Some of the services that are offered include therapy, parenting classes, foster care, adoption, intensive treatment foster care, domestic violence prevention and treatment, and Project Q a support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.
One of the newest programs created by the agency is the T.A.Y. Drop-In Center which is located at the cross streets of Coldwater Canyon and Vanowen. The acronym T.A.Y. stands for Transition Age Youth. In my tour of the center I asked Charles why the facility was created and he explained that statistics indicate an increase of homeless youth in the San Fernando Valley. Also, during his position as the former CEO of the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention life-line for LGBTQ youth found that, "young people would call the crisis line from the valley and indicated they were despondent and felt alone. So it was with the awareness of lack of services that the agency wanted to create an inclusive safe-space for all youth, regardless of sexual orientation and/or gender identity."
The T.A.Y. Drop-In Center is an impressive program that is unique in that it is was formed specifically with youth as the inspiration. Young people between the ages of 14-21 that are either foster children, at-risk, LGBTQ, or homeless are all welcome. At this center participants are able to take part in activities such as Yoga, Anger Management classes, Art Classes, Vocational Support, Education Support, Counseling, and Life Skills Training.
The center has amenities that most youth programs do not provide, like a Cyber Lounge, a laundry room, showers, a kitchen with hot breakfasts, outdoor patio, and group rooms. In addition, it is a secure location staffed with an on-site security officer for protection of participants. Youth also are able to use the Primary Care Teen Clinic provided by the Valley Community Clinic.
The clinic is open to youth between the ages of 12-19, and some of the services it offers are immunizations, pre-natal care, private testing, and birth control. Another resource that the T.A.Y. Drop-In Center has available to guests are clothes. Pants, skirts, T-shirts, casual wear and career pieces are free to participants in efforts to help them while in transition or job searching.
For those interested in the LGBTQQA Youth Peer Group, participants meets weekly for empowerment, outreach, and peer support. The group meets every Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Drop-In Center. Registration is not required; you are welcome to just show up.
