New Car Shrinks to Fit in Parking Spaces
German researchers have build a demo car that can be scrunched shorter to make it easier to park, can turn it's wheels to drive sideways, and can come when called.
With hopes of solving traffic problems of the future, the German Center for Artificial Intelligence has demoed a car at the annual CeBit conference being held this year in Hanover Germany that not only can be shrunk down to fit in a parking space, but can turn its wheels to right angles allowing the car to park by driving sideways. The AFP newswire via StraitTimes is reporting that the car is only about seven feet long to start with and can scrunch itself down to just five and a half if need be.
The Newswire spoke with Timo Birnschein lead engineer on the project and reports that he says that not only can the car fit in the tiniest of parking spaces, but it's owner can push a button from a remote location and the car will unpark itself and the car will come to where he or she is waiting on it.
To assist drivers in getting into tight spaces the car also comes equipped with multiple sensors that track distances between other objects or vehicles and displays them so that the drive can use images other than what can be seen by looking around when parking. Birnschein says he and his team have been working on the car for just fifteen months and expect to produce a version soon that can be tested in the real world.
Currently the car, which is all electric and is called the E0 has a top speed of just thirty five miles per hour and a range of about seventy miles. Birnschein says it's intended to be used in the congested city, thus, faster speeds and greater distances aren't needed. This allows for a much smaller battery which for many electric cars is one of the high cost barriers to purchasing an electric vehicle.
The car has one more neat trick up its sleeve, and that is its ability to "dock" with other similarly equipped cars. What happens is one car is chosen to be the leader, another car docks with it from behind, then another car docks with that one, slowly forming a train of vehicles. In this way, several cars can be make their way out of the city back home to the suburbs with just one engine. Vehicle owners could either take turns being the lead car, or simply share the costs associated with recharging.
The group doesn't have a time frame in mind yet for when such a vehicle might go on sale, but says that the ideas that it has demonstrated will likely soon start appearing in other more mainstream vehicles.
