Easy to Make Crocheted Hair Accessories
Crocheted Hair scrunchies are fun and easy to make and can add a one of a kind flourish to any outfit.
You will need a package of the cloth covered hair bands sold at any department store.
Some pretty scraps of yarn or buy a pretty textured interesting color of yarn that will go with your wardrobe. Check out local rummage sales for boxes of retro yarn and you will be the envy of all your friends.
All you need to know are the basic single crochet (sc) half double crochet (hdc) and double crochet (dc) stitches and you will be able to make a number of different designs.
Begin by choosing one of your favorite crochet hooks, I use a g or h depending on weather the yarn is a lighter sports or baby yarn or a heavier worsted weight.
Start by making a loop of yarn on your hook.
Place your hook through the center of the hair band and pull up a loop of yarn then pull the yarn through both loops to form a sc. Continue working in sc around the hair band until your band is tightly covered with sc, " usually around 50 or 60 stitches".
Slip stitch the last stitch to the first sc, then
Chain the appropriate number and turn. Here you can choose to make a row of hdc or dc depending on your mood or style.
In the second row do 2 hdc or dc in each sc until all sc's have two stitches.
You can tie off the yarn here and weave in the ends to have a smaller scrunchie or you can choose to add another row of sc, hdc, or dc in each stitch. This will make a much fluffier scrunchie.
The number of different stitches and colors you choose will give you an endless number of designs.
This project is great for beginners as it only takes a short amount of time to finish and will give a lot of practice with stitches and keeping even tension on the yarn. Not to mention experience in working with many different yarns.

Row 2: DC's 2 in the first stitch and then 1 in the next stitch around.

Row one: sc's
Row 2: 2hdc in each stitch around
Row 3: 1 dc in each stitch around

Design 3:
Simply make one very full row of either sc or hdc and then weave in the ends for a simple look.
Try changing colors on each row for a different look, or maybe use variegated yarn that will match many different outfits.
