Hemp Clothing: Going Green or Supporting Drug Use?
Due to stereotypes regarding the green living movement, hemp clothing and jewelry have been banned by some school dress codes.
Hemp has a reputation for being an extremely earth-friendly fiber-- and for good reason. Compared to alternatives like cotton and petroleum-based synthetic fibers, the ecological footprint of organic hemp is negligible. Hemp clothing requires less water and less land than organic cotton, and it is known for restoring nitrates in eroded soil. Advocates of earth-friendly agriculture have encouraged the use of industrial hemp for decades, and the use of hemp in clothing, food, and cosmetics is becoming very popular among practitioners of green living.
Despite very common misconceptions, industrial hemp contains none of the psychoactive components associated with marijuana as a drug. However, many people view hemp clothing and hemp jewelery as political statements intended to support the legalization of psychoactive marijuana, rather than just industrial hemp. The "hippie" stereotype that plagues the green living movement may compromise the acceptability of industrial hemp, owing to the tendency of the mainstream to associate hemp with psychoactive cannabis.
Though I can not speak for today's high school students, I personally wore hemp jewelry very frequently when I was a teenager. While I was, and still am, an outspoken advocate of green living and the legalization of industrial hemp for use in clothing and food, I do not support the use of marijuana or any other recreational drug. I also firmly believe that the illicit use of marijuana tends to undermine the green living movement, by compromising the potential for cannabis' legalization for medical, industrial, and culinary purposes.
Today's students are focusing more than any generations since the nineteen sixties on moving toward a greener, more sustainable future, so it is not surprising that more of them are wearing hemp clothing and jewelry. Not only is this fiber much more earth-friendly than some alternatives, but it also sends a clear statement to mainstream American culture thta industrial hemp has many uses that are well worth exploring, both to guarantee the future of our planet and to open cleaner sources of industry in the United States.
However, because of misconceptions and stereotypes regarding both the green living movement and the nature of cannabis itself, it appears that some mis-informed parents and school staff-members have launched a minor crusade against the plant. Perhaps, with further education and an end to the stereotypes of green living, hemp clothing and hemp jewelery will one day be as acceptable as its much more detrimental counterparts.
